Description
pronounced: /oh-pay-uh-pay-uh/) is the Hawaiian word for bat. The ‘ōpe’ape’a is Hawai’i’s only native land mammal and is currently an endangered species. The ‘ōpe’ape’a is nocturnal (sleeps during the day and hunts at night). It is a small bat usually weighing 5-8 ounces and has a wing span of 10.5-13.5 inches. It can only be found on the islands of Hawai’i, Kaua’i, and Maui.
