Description
(pronounced hay-ay nah-loo) means surfer, surf rider, or surfing. Heʻe nalu is believed to have originated in ancient Polynesia, but Hawaiʻi has become known as the ‘surfing capital of the world.’ Heʻe nalu was once a sport reserved only for ali’i (Hawaiian royalty), and is therefore often known as the “sport of kings.” Surfing is one of the best things to do in Hawaiʻi! It is a fun pastime, provides a deep connection to the ocean and Hawaiian culture, and has become a competitive sport throughout the world. “E heʻe nalu kākou!” (“Let’s go surf!”)
